[This] is the answer I gave when I was doing the 20 Day Challenge, but for edtember - even though I’m so late with this, wow, I’m a horrible fan - I’m going to choose something different, because it’s no fun to say the same things over and over. Although I have to admit that I still feel exactly the same way as I did when I posted that answer: All of Ed’s covers are so right that it is super hard to choose among them.
For today, I’ve decided that my two favorite covers Ed has done are Feeling Good and Volcano. Feeling Good is a song that I have loved for years. I actually used Nina Simone’s version for a thing I made in my last fandom. It was a music video put together by just using clips from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but the whole thing was ironic because I only used clips of Buffy feeling the opposite of good… Anyway, it’s been one of my favorite songs for a very long time, and I had no idea when I became a fan of Ed that he would ever cover it, so I was pretty ecstatic when he did! I love the song because the lyrics are so positive, but it doesn’t really sound like a happy song when you listen to it. It sounds like… well, it just sounds sexy to me. Kind of smug, maybe. I think it suits Ed down to the ground, and as much as I love Nina’s version, I might actually like Ed’s even better. I kind of have a thing for the boy’s voice. You know.
[Volcano] is my other favorite cover today, and I’m gonna say it tops Feeling Good by just a smidge, so this is my real answer. Of course anything with both Ed’s voice and a cello in it is going to have a distinct advantage over other songs, but besides it just being a beautiful song and performance, I like this so much because I think it’s really cool that Ed got to perform it with Vivienne Long. Did you know that when Ed was asked to put together his dream band, he listed Vivienne Long for the cello, even though cello is really kind of a strange and random instrument to put in your dream band? And I like Laura’s voice, too! I think it’s so cool that this ended up happening, and the result was pretty much perfect. I just wish I had a professionally recorded version of the three of them doing this song together.
